A
Temporary Home, 875 Howard Street, San
Francisco
During the rebuilding of the Academy at its
permanent site in Golden Gate Park, the
museum has relocated to a temporary home so
that construction can be completed faster,
more efficiently, and safely for visitors,
staff, animals, and research collections.
The temporary museum allows the Academy to
continue serving visitors during the
construction phase.
Located in downtown San Francisco at 875
Howard Street, the temporary Academy brings
the natural world to the heart of an urban
setting. Among the public exhibitions are
the Steinhart Aquarium and a Naturalist
Center that enable visitors to engage in
hands-on scientific activities. A monumental
feat, more than 18 million natural history
specimens from the Academy's scientific
collections were transported to the
temporary space for study by scientists.
